INTRODUCTION 

Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar mineral that contains small plate-like inclusions of hematite. This causes it to exhibit a reflective or shimmering appearance known as schiller or aventurescence. 

Sunstone is predominantly found in Norway, Russia, India, Canada, and the United States. The largest known deposits are located in Oregon.

This vibrant mineral comes in various colors like red, orange, yellow, and green. Natural sunstones display dramatic flashes of light, known as schiller, that appear to dance and sparkle as the stone is moved. The inclusions of hematite platelets within the stone cause this unique optical phenomenon. 

Sunstone has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It has a vitreous to pearly luster and a cleavage that is perfect in two directions. The stone is translucent to opaque in clarity.
